 Framework for CrossGrid-DataGrid Collaboration

1. Grid Architecture

Both Grids have similar structures and are based on the same Globus elements. CrosssGrid (X#) plans to extend DataGrid (EDG) functionality and geographic distribution.
Collaboration will include:
bullet

reuse of middleware developed within both projects,

bullet

joint design and implementation of new, interactive-oriented Grid services,

bullet

establishing joint teams for:
bullet

evaluation of OGSA for both Grids,

bullet

participation in the GLUE effort,

bullet

evaluation of software engineering tools,

bullet

elaboration of common programming and naming conventions,

bullet

elaboration of joint proposals for the GGF,

bullet

participation of chairmen of EDG ATF and X#AT in meetings of architecture teams of both projects.

2. Applications

X# is oriented towards interactive applications, which are also the subject of EDG development.
Collaboration will include:
bullet

elaboration of methodology and generic structure of interactive Grid applications,

bullet

common work on high energy physics applications,

bullet

common work on data security.

3. Benchmarks and monitoring

The benchmarks planned in X# will provide important information about the performance of Grid middleware and applications. These will be used by EDG and X# for testing of successive releases of EDG software.

4. Testbeds

X# members from Spain, Portugal and Germany are actively taking part in the EDG testbed organization. Both projects are interested in extending this common work to all X# testbed partners.
Collaboration will include:
bullet

interoperability of both Grids (first for HEP applications),

bullet

mutual recognition of Certification Authorities,

bullet

elaboration of common access and usage policies and procedures,

bullet

common work of testbed integration teams and testbed support teams,

bullet

elaboration of common installation and configuration procedures,

bullet

joint effort involving the migration of software to the Solaris platform.

5. Software testing

X# will cooperate with EDG in testing the early beta releases of EDG middleware; this is considered the first step towards interoperability of both Grids.

6. Dissemination

X# will establish its Research of Industry Forum in close cooperation with EDG.

7. Management

To ensure smooth and continuous flow of information between EDG and X#, the project management teams will be in regular contact in such a way that project manager are invited to become members of the Project Management Board of EDG and the X# Steering Group respectively.
Collaboration will also include:
bullet

exchange of operating procedures,

bullet

exchange of reviewers of deliverables,

bullet

exchange of document templates,

bullet

synchronization of Grid developments.

8. Concluding remarks

All of the described forms of collaboration will be acknowledged in reports presented to the EU, in related deliverables and in publications.
